This class includes the theory and practice of how to build and maintain the didgeridoo. You will learn to create the sound, circular breathing techniques, and didgeridoo specific rhythms. Each lesson includes a warm-up with diaphragmatic breathing exercises.
A didgeridoo is required to attend this class.
The Language of Improvisation: with Laura Inserra
This class begins January 6, 2010 and meets every Wednesday at 1:30pm for 8 weeks for $150.
When we speak of improvisation we usually imagine one who is 'playing', rather than one who is 'listening and playing'. However, improvisation is a dialog between one's self and the others who are performing. We will explore ways to follow our creativity. I will share how to use one ear to listen to the inner landscape (individual ear) and one ear to listen the ensemble (collective ear). We will also learn ways to communicate with our bodies and instruments as well as how to create the right space in which to express it.
This is an advanced class for musicians and performers
Hang Drum: with Laura Inserra
This class begins January 6, 2010 and meets every Wednesday at 5:30pm for 8 weeks $150.00
In this class we will study different ways of handling the HANG. I will teach you different ways to play the instrument and basic knowledge of percussion theory. You will also learn improvising techniques and leave the class with the ability to create your own composition.
A HANG is required to attend this class. One instrument is provided for student use.
Percussion and Rhythmic Improvisation I: with Laura Inserra
This class begins January 6, 2010 and meets every Wednesday at 7pm for 8 weeks at $150
This class will focus on percussion techniques and improvisation for beginners. For people who desire to re-discover and express the spontaneous pulsations embodied in the human being, you will learn to improvise world rhythms. You will study the relationship between 'pause-tempo-rhythm' and then create 'musical dialogues'. Listening skills and the ability to identify rhythms will be sharpened within different musical styles. We will work using intuition and spontaneity to explore our potentiality, in addition to sheet music to further understand the musical language.
Percussion instrument required to attend this class.

About Zambaleta:
In Egypt, Zambaleta is what we call a spontaneous chaotic street party. Zambaleta happens when everyone is actively participating, whether by playing music, singing, or dancing. That's what we chose to call our nonprofit because we aspire to create an inclusive musical community where everyone has equal access to music education irrespective of their economic background or musical competency. And that's what we do. We develop environments conducive to experiencing and learning music.
