World premiere of new interdisciplinary work by Purple Moon Dance Project founder Jill Togawa inspired by memories, stories and “interrupted dreams” of the WWII internment experience of the Japanese American community in south Berkeley.

The site-specific performance weaves together live music by Laura Inserra, Claudia Cuentas and Pauchi Sasaki (all of Samavesha); choreography performed by Togawa and Bay Area dancers Olivia Eng, Michelle Fletcher, Ruth Ichinaga, Arisika Razak and Sharon Sato; spoken word and 3-D art installation by visual artist and taiko drummer Ellen Bepp, of Somei Yoshino Taiko.  The work will be performed outside the former Berkeley residence of the Nakazawa family, whose moving story of pre- and post-internment was the source for Togawa’s piece.  Tea reception and community dialogue follows performances. See Performance dedications section below for special honors.
