Instrumental 2 - the suffering of the body

Scenario Pubblico. Catania, Aug. 18-19-25-26, 2008

Contrast/opposition between a "celestial" sound and a "celestial" musical instrument, the hang and the dancer's body. Recalling Saint Agata, child/woman, martyr and saint, dance acts on the disarticulation and suffering of a woman body which is broken, torn, martyrized, but always invoked.

A cooproduction of Compagnia Zappalà Danza, Scenario Pubblico and Uva Grapes Catania Contemporary Dance Festival. Sicily (Italy)

Artist in Resonance

SoundWorks Collection

About the HANG:
The Hang is a musical instrument in the idiophone class created by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer in Bern, Switzerland.

The instrument is constructed from two half-shells of deep drawn, nitrided steel sheet glued together at the rim leaving the inside hollow and creating a distinct 'UFO shape'. The top ("Ding") side has a center 'note' hammered into it and seven or eight 'tone fields' hammered around the center. The bottom ("Gu") is a plain surface that has a rolled hole in the center with a tuned note that can be created when the rim is struck.

The name Hang comes from the Bernese German word for hand.

About ARTIST IN RESONANCE:
There is an awe inducing beauty in witnessing the transformation of a performer become a single entity with their instrument. Even more intriguing are the distinct characteristics of these tools that transport audiences to uncharted sonic landscapes. In each episode, the artists will guide us through the stories of how these unique instruments were crafted, discovered, and mastered.

Tempered Grace

Temper (verb): To improve the resiliency of a substance. To bring to the desired hardness or strength.
Grace (noun): Simple elegance or refinement of movement.
