Introductory Seminar 

 

Hosted by Laura Inserra, during this seminar we will look at the history of the Hang and its 20 years of evolution, we will explore its architecture and enchanting musicality, and we will learn the basics of the MetaHang Technique. Intuitive, ergonomic, and creative, this unique technique is the development of 18 years of Laura performing and teaching Hang and handpans internationally.

 

Designed to minimize physical effort and tension, the MetaHang Technique maximizes efficiency and flow. In this seminar you will learn how to the Hang and the handpans, build a musician mind, express yourself musically, and enjoy the rhythm in your body.

This seminar will also introduce you to the Structured Improvisation Technique - allowing you to play music while practicing, to compose while improvising, and to release tension while immersing your body in music.

Q 1 ~ How do you compose with these instruments?

Q 2 ~ I have a hard time following the rhythm. How do you know the rhythm of a tune?

Q 3 ~ Do you recommend connecting your breathing with the rhythm you play?

Q 4 ~ How strong do you tap with your hands? And how do you create those amazing sounds?

Q 5 ~ Why in some instruments the notes are round and in others are oval?

Q 6  ~ Do you always place the instrument with the hight notes in front of you?

Q 7 ~ How do you place the instrument on my lap to keep it from slipping?

Q 8 ~ How do you recommend to hit the notes closest to you?

Q 9 ~ I am very short and it’s challenging to hold the instrument on my lap. Any recommendations?

MetaHang Training Program

Music Education, Training & Apprenticeship for HandPan Instruments

Open to students of all levels.

The MetaHang Program has 3 levels and certificates that allow students to learn, play, and teach the MetaHang Technique.

The Intermediate Level requires:

  • To know and practice the Language of Music (pulsation, rhythm, melody, dynamics, timbre, silence, etc.)

  • To know and practice the basic elements of Rhythmic Theory (embodiment of the pulsation, accents, groove, divisions and inner subdivisions, even and odd rhythms, syncopation, ghost notes, triplets, polyrhythms, etc.)

  • To know and practice the basic elements of Melodic Theory (melodic lines, arpeggio, refrain, music dialogues, etc.)

  • To know the basic elements of the MetaHang Technique® (all fingers’ strike, swinging technique, gravitational cadence, anticipation of the movement, anchors, Ergonomic Gestures Technique, Structured Improvisation Technique, damping/smorzato technique,  etc.)

  • To build a Musician Mind

  • To be able to create and play simple Compositions

  • To be able to play as a soloist and in a duo

  • To be able to perform in front of a small audience

 

The Advanced Level requires:

  • To have reached the Intermediate Level

  • To know and practice Music Theory (measure, music annotation, rhythm, melody, harmony, chords, major and minor scales, etc.)

  • To have established a Musician Mind

  • To be able to play the Gu side

  • To practice advanced elements of the META HANG Technique (roll, embellishments, HANG Upright, etc.)

  • To be able to play Harmonics

  • To use music as the Language of Emotions

  • To be able to perform in front of a big audience

 

The Master Level requires:

  • To have reached the Intermediate and the Advanced Level

  • To be able to compose and play with the the META HANG Technique

  • To be able to play fast with ease

  • To be able to do Music Analysis

  • To be able to write and play complex Compositions

  • To be a Virtuoso with the HandPan Instruments

  • To be able to teach the META HANG Technique

  • To be able to perform in public venues and in big ensembles
